With four Academy Awards and six other nominations under his belt, there are few individuals more seasoned, and deservedly celebrated, in the visual effects and postproduction community than Joe Letteri.
Film: Avatar
Avatar was the landmark stereo film of the modern era, taking 3D technology to new heights, and changing the way many people thought about 3D film and visual effects. Weta Digital developed a new generation of visual-effects techniques to realise this ambitious film.

Our brief was simple, create emotionally engaging digital characters that blended naturally with their live-action counterparts in photorealistic CG environments.

The largest VFX film Wētā FX has ever worked on has a total shot count of 4,001 (including omits / final omits). There are 3,289 shots in the final film and Wētā FX worked on 3,240 VFX shots, 2,225 of which were water shots.

Artists can 'handle' the model like a physical object – moving, rotating, zooming in and out as they paint. This is much faster than old-fashioned 2D painting methods, letting artists move quickly from trying out ideas to producing final looks.
Technology: FACETS
The system captures nuanced details of an actor’s facial performance, figures out how the muscles have moved, and then maps them onto virtual characters, even if the character has very non-human proportions.

Wētā FX has developed an entirely new face pipeline. The team first developed this breakthrough new approach in 2019, but the company has only just revealed the new approach at SIGGRAPH ASIA in Korea.
Technology: Virtual Production
It lets directors work on a mocap stage, but view a virtual environment and characters. Virtual production has been around for years (an early version was used in The Fellowship of the Ring), but Avatar was the pivotal moment.

The actual movement of your skin surface is driven by the structures within your hand such as bones, muscles, skin, tendons, and fat.
