The hero creature of the film is George, an albino Gorilla who mutates into a giant, unstoppable monster. We used the experience we have gained over a long history of creature work, especially the recent Planet of the Apes films, to create the photorealistic albino silverback, as well as the mutated lizard, Lizzie, and the flying wolf, Ralph.
The size and scope of destruction in this film is immense. We were able to achieve it by producing character-driven building destruction on pre-fractured building assets, coupled with rigid body destructions and multiple volumetric simulations like dust and debris. Our implementation of physically-based simulation data was key to achieving realistic and believable destruction. It highlights the workflow partnership between our Animation and FX simulation teams, and how they married physically accurate simulations with the art direction required for the film.
Weta Digital was the sole VFX house on Rampage, creating 600 shots under the guidance of Visual Effects Supervisor Erik Winquist.
