As with the previous films, we handled all of the visual effects on War, contributing 1500 shots that dealt with every aspect of the film - from vast digital environments featuring thousands of digital characters, down to the small emotional moments between the ape characters.
On hearing the announcement, Senior Visual Effects Supervisor Joe Letteri said “We are immensely proud of this work and grateful to the Academy for recognising War for the Planet of the Apes with a nomination today. This is the final film in the trilogy, and we’ve been really happy to see how audiences have been swept up by the emotional story of Caesar and his fellow ape characters.”
Joe shares the nomination with Animation Supervisor Daniel Barrett, Visual Effects Supervisor Dan Lemmon and Special Effects Supervisor Joel Whist.
For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we were responsible for the third act—an epic battle that takes place on the massively complex environment of Planet Ego. We also created the morphing form of Ego’s human guise and shared the animation of fan-favourites Rocket and Baby Groot.
Weta Digital Visual Effects Supervisor Guy Williams shares the nomination with Overall Visual Effects Supervisor Christopher Townsend, Framestore Visual Effects Supervisor Jonathan Fawkner and Special Effects Supervisor Dan Sudick.
“It’s a fantastic honor to be nominated today amongst such an impressive group of peers”, said Weta Digital Visual Effects Supervisor Guy Williams. “The visual effects on this film were ambitious, but Marvel and Chris Townsend led a phenomenal team that came together to deliver amazing work.”
The 90th Oscars® will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, March 4th.
