He transitioned to the Models department within a year and took his first role as a Junior Modeler on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
As a modeler, Nicholas creates 3D models of characters, environments, props, vehicles and almost anything else digital in a scene. His models are then passed on to other departments for integration into the film.
Nicholas knew from a young age that he would pursue a career in VFX. He focused on art at high school and signed up for an animation night class at Hagley Community College in Christchurch, which propelled him onto the career path of a 3D artist.
He went on to achieve a Diploma in 3D Animation and VFX for Film at Media Design School in Auckland, where he graduated with an industry award in 3D modelling. The following year he transitioned into a Bachelor of Art and Design in 3D Animation and VFX for film, graduating in 2014.
ADVICE FROM NICHOLAS: If you are studying or thinking about getting into the industry, start doing it! Immerse yourself - watch movies, take any opportunity you can to get to know people in the industry, and always be honest with yourself and others. The VFX industry is constantly evolving and progressing so you are always learning something new and improving. Just remember to take a break so you don't burn out!
